Learn All About the Greg Maddux Rookie Cards

By: Marty Beets

Greg Maddux is considered one of the best pitchers of all time. He was an 8-time All-Star and 4-time Cy Young winner during his career and was elected into the baseball Hall of Fame in 2014

His rookie and early cards are some of the most valuable cards of the 1980s. Let's take a look at some of these vintage Greg Maddux cards:

1987 Leaf

Card #36

This is the most valuable Greg Maddux rookie card. It is universally considered a rookie.

The 1987 Leaf Greg Maddux card is the Canadian version of his Donruss rookie card.  It was made in far fewer numbers than the Donruss version and is valuable in high-grade condition.

1986 PittsfieldCubs

This is a minor league card made for a stadium giveaway. It is considered a pre-rookie.

Card #14

Greg Maddox played for the Pittsfield Cubs in 1986. Pittsfield was a Cubs AA affiliate. In addition to Maddux, this set also included a Rafael Palmeiro pre-rookie card.

1987 Topps Traded Tiffany

This is the limited edition glossy version of the 1987 Topps Traded and is more valuable. It is considered a rookie card.

Card #70T

The Topps Tiffany sets from the 1980s were premium quality cards produced in limited numbers.  There is a less valuable regular version of this card.

1987 Fleer Update

This is from the Fleer Update set of rookies and traded players.  It is considered a rookie card.

Card #U-86

Fleer made two versions of this set - one with a regular finish and one with a glossy finish.  The glossy version of the card is a little rarer and typically worth 50% to  100% more.
